You can't get on an apparatus without chalk, it is essential in a gymnasts life. This chalk really gives you the grip you need to perform your routines effectively. And when you get a small or a massive rip, just rub some chalk on it and continue what you are doing. It doesn't numb the pain but it sure does make a difference by keeping your blood off the equipment and still maintaining a good grip. However, be careful not to eat or inhale the chalk, its not edible and sure does leave a nasty taste in your mouth, but only momentarily! Chalk...the better part of gymnasts life.
